With 2.5 miles of Peace River frontage, the Peace River Mitigation Bank (PRMB) is part of a targeted preservation corridor that stretches from the headwaters at Lake Hancock to the Charlotte Harbor Estuary. Because of this extensive frontage and the ability to build on parts of the property, state agencies had been unable to acquire the property for over a decade. Following Hurricane Charley, the property was visually damaged and became available for mitigation banking.
The PRMB was historically grazed and farmed causing ecological degradation that had gone unchecked for over 50 years. When Hurricane Charley struck in 2004, much of the tree canopy was damaged, providing a fertile environment for growth of exotic plants dispersed by the storm. Enhancement of the PRMB by the removal of exotic vegetation, brush thinning, and establishment of a healthy fire regime is restoring natural function to all habitats within the 487-acre site. Perpetual preservation and funded management of the PRMB will ensure benefits to wildlife, water quality, and flood attenuation will be sustainable over the long term. The PRMB has been fully approved by State and federal agencies to provide for 138 forested UMAM credits.
The Peace River Mitigation Bank service area follows the SWFWMD Peace River Basin boundary. To verify if your project qualifies for credit purchase and to receive up-to-date price and availability information, please call 888-536-2855
