Upper Coastal Mitigation Bank

The Upper Coastal Mitigation Bank (UCMB) is a sustainable stepping stone site between two Florida black bear ranges and has been identified as one of five key connections in a regional preserve complex of almost 1.7 million acres.  Corridor links such as the UCMB improve the function of existing preserves by allowing gene exchange between otherwise separate wildlife populations. While this site had been approved for public acquisition in 2003, its high development potential ultimately put it out of reach.

Local benefits of the UCMB include protection of water quality in the Homosassa River and on-site spring run, and establishment of a "hub" connection between the river and preserved lands north and south of the bank.  The primary function of a mitigation bank is to provide meaningful, sustainable, and perpetual wetland values. The UCMB meets these criteria with no need for extensive restoration.  The result is a highly diverse wildlife corridor that protects wetland functions at the local and regional levels.

The UCMB has been approved for 47 credits by the Southwest Florida Water Management District (SWFWMD). A limited number of State herbaceous and forested Uniform Mitigation Assessment Methodology (UMAM) credits are currently available. Federal permitting through the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is not yet complete, but please call for the latest on the bank’s status.

The Upper Coastal Mitigation Bank service area follows the SWFWMD Upper Coastal Basin boundary. To verify if your project qualifies for credit purchase and to receive up-to-date price and availability information, please call 888-536-2855.
