A Brief History – Florida Environmental
Our company was founded in 1985 as Florida Environmental, Inc., providing environmental consulting services to our clients from a single office in Port Charlotte. By 1987 we added ecosystem restoration services for selected clients, primarily to fulfill their wetland mitigation requirements.

Native Plants
A native plant nursery in Palmetto was acquired in 1994 as our internal demand for native plants increased. In 1996, a larger native plant nursery was started near Arcadia, where all production was eventually consolidated.

Rapid Expansion
A period of rapid revenue growth and expansion began in 1996. That year the company opened a Central Florida branch office in Kissimmee to serve its clients. In 1998, we began working outside of Florida with projects in North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama and Mississippi. Demand for ecosystem restoration services expanded to include native plant landscaping, especially for golf courses. Ecosystem restoration services led the company’s expansion, and by 2001 comprised two-thirds of its services.

2002 in Tallahassee
In 2002 the company established a Tallahassee office under the leadership of a well-known environmental leader, Allison DeFoor. Mr. DeFoor had served as Governor Bush’s Everglades Czar and Environmental Policy Coordinator during 1999 and 2000 to lead the Governor’s efforts to finalize the plan, and build legislative commitment for the giant Everglades restoration project.

Wetland Mitigation
Our company has continued to test markets and expand services. In 2000 we entered the strip mine reclamation business, and within one year we had completed the largest wetland mitigation project on a clay settling area in Florida.

Our company's success is based on sound business practices and allowing markets to guide growth within our areas of expertise. We believe the unmet need in the market is for technology and implementation skills to protect, restore and manage the Earth's natural ecosystems.

A Global Commitment
While the demand for our expertise has historically been most acutely evident in Florida, it is truly global. Our company is committed to meeting this challenge, and on October 1, 2002, we changed our name to EarthBalance® to better reflect our global perspective and commitment to finding and implementing solutions for human fulfillment on a healthy planet.
